First Chapter



First Chapter works with families and their children from birth, giving books and guidance on simple ways to incorporate reading and spoken language into daily life.

The program was established in response to the word gap crisis.  Research shows that children from underserved populations hear 30 million fewer words in the first three years than children from high-income families. This massive discrepancy is called the “word gap.”

Children who hear fewer words are less prepared for school and tend to lag behind their peers the rest of their school careers.  Research shows that to achieve school readiness, it is not enough to hear more words. The quality of words spoken and positive language interactions are critical to a child’s learning.
